📰 Chess News
After getting “completely crushed” by 23-year-old GM Alisher Suleymenov at the 2023 Qatar Masters, Magnus Carlsen blamed his inability to concentrate due to his opponent wearing a watch, a violation of anti-cheating rules.
2/2 I obviously take responsibility for my inability to deal with those thoughts properly, but it’s also incredibly frustrating to see organisers still not taking anti-cheating seriously at all (no transmission delay, spectators walking around the playing hall with smartphones)

🍿 Chess Drama / Buzz
GM Vladimir Fedoseev abruptly left the playing hall after FM Senthil played 58…Qg7 in their round 2 game of the Qatar Masters Open. Fedoseev never returned, forcing his opponent to wait 1 hour and 34 minutes before being able to claim a win on time. Should Fedoseev be punished for poor sportsmanship?

♟️ Chess Tip of the Week
"Rooks Belong On Open Files"
Rooks lack mobility during the opening and early middlegame. They are harder to develop than knights and bishops. Remember to place your rooks on open files, columns that don’t contain pawns, in order to maximize their impact.
If there are no open files, consider placing rooks behind pawns you can push forward. With all else equal in a position, the first player to control open files, especially in the center, tends to gain a dynamic advantage.
