GMs Veselin Topalov and Magnus Carlsen have received wildcard entries for the 2025 Grand Chess Tour. This marks Topalov’s return to competitive chess at the age of 50 after years of minimal play.
Ukrainian chess grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko has been suspended from global chess by FIDE over a cheating scandal alleging he hid a phone in a toilet at the Spanish Team Championship. FIDE’s Ethics & Disciplinary Commission concluded that he attempted to cheat but was unsure whether actual cheating occurred in those games.
